US online casino states show strong growth in April

All seven regulated states continue to experience robust year-over-year growth, each recording a minimum increase of 25%.
In April, the seven states that permit regulated online casino gaming collectively generated an impressive $868.6 million, with every state showing individual growth of at least 25% compared to the previous year.
This represents a remarkable 32.5% increase from April 2024, equating to an additional $213 million in revenue. Furthermore, April maintained its momentum following a record-breaking March, where operator revenue exceeded $900 million. Notably, Connecticut achieved a new milestone for the second consecutive month.
The recorded wagering handle reached an astounding $10.2 billion. Of this, Pennsylvania contributed over $7.5 billion, while Connecticut surpassed the $1.6 billion mark for the third time in four months.
In terms of taxable operator revenue, April tallied $787.9 million, with state governments receiving $169.3 million—up by $43.9 million compared to last year. This figure does not encompass local taxes or tribal disbursements.
In-Depth Analysis: Connecticut’s Market
Connecticut has emerged as a duopoly, primarily dominated by DraftKings and FanDuel, both competing fiercely for market share. DraftKings has actively pursued aggressive marketing strategies, evidenced by its promotional expenditure of nearly $11 million in April. This marks its second consecutive month in eight figures, achieving an all-time high and comprising approximately 1.4% of its overall $816.4 million in wagers.
This strategic investment, combined with a record-breaking hold of 3.9% on virtual gaming and slots, contributed to an all-time high gross revenue of $31.6 million—an increase of 38.3% year-over-year and surpassing its previous record of $28.4 million set in March.
Meanwhile, FanDuel Casino also celebrated a record in gross winnings, totaling $29.2 million—slightly above its March earnings by $30,000. This figure represents a significant year-over-year increase of 57.6%. FanDuel’s promotional spend exceeded $6 million for the fifth consecutive month, although it still accounted for less than 1% of the overall drop.
The cumulative winnings for the state reached $61 million, reflecting a 47% hike, with the $1.6 billion drop capturing a 23.1% growth.
