Stefy Bau, Init Esports: Breaking barriers, building pathways

In November’s iGB founders’ column, Stefy Bau reflects on her journey from motorsports to empowering female gamers worldwide through Init Esports.
From an early age in Italy, I was captivated by motorsports. I envisioned myself racing on the grandest stages, pushing limits, and leaving my mark on the sport. This fervor ignited my competitive spirit, ultimately leading me to triumph in three world championships, two WMX titles, and seven Italian championships. However, when an injury curtailed my racing career in 2005, I recognized this not as an end, but as a transformative opportunity to apply my track experiences to create something greater.
Since then, my passion has shifted toward fostering opportunities for women within the predominantly male motorsport industry. I have dedicated myself to building platforms that empower women, collaborating with organizations and firms to guide young women through the industry’s unique challenges. Whether delivering inspiring speeches, taking part in global events, or developing strategic frameworks for inclusivity, I have made it my mission to pave pathways for the next generation.
The Birth of Init Esports
My foray into the realm of esports began in 2019 during a family visit in Italy, where I was struck by my niece’s enthusiasm for video gaming. Witnessing her dive deep into this digital world sparked a creative idea: could we merge this virtual excitement with the thrilling realm of motorsport?
Upon delving deeper, I discovered a burgeoning industry with immense potential, yet it lacked a dedicated platform for female sim racers. This revelation led to the inception of Init Esports. Fast forward four years, we have not only bridged this gap but transformed into a significant player in both the esports and sim racing arenas. From hosting electrifying events to showcasing talented female racers, we have cultivated a vibrant community that champions inclusion and excellence.
With over half of gamers globally identifying as female, we are tapping into an underserved market brimming with talent, ambition, and drive. At Init Esports, we are committed to empowering women in both esports and motorsports, equipping them with the resources and support necessary to unlock their full potential.
Empowering Women Through Virtual Racing
Breaking into the world of motorsports can be daunting for women; however, the virtual landscape tells a different story. Through Init Esports, we have established a welcoming, inclusive environment primed for women to thrive.
A highlight of our initiatives is the Sim 4 STEM program, designed to introduce young girls to motorsports through engaging STEM activities. Participants from K-12 to college gain hands-on experience in roles they may one day occupy in a motorsport team, addressing real-world challenges with technology. This initiative cultivates critical thinking and teamwork skills in a supportive, enjoyable context. Studies indicate that gamers often excel in STEM fields; thus, we actively help these young women realize their potential and consider career pathways they may have previously overlooked.
Energy and Community
Additionally, our Screen to Speed program offers a virtual sim-racing experience, allowing female drivers to experience the thrill of track racing within a secure, exhilarating environment. The contagious energy and genuine excitement of each event foster a growing community of passionate racers with limitless potential.
The essence of Init Esports can be captured in one word: community. From inception, we have nurtured a space where individuals unite to support one another, cultivate skills, and share their passion for racing. Being part of a community enhances confidence and drives success. At Init Esports, we champion this spirit, facilitating bold steps for women in their careers, both on and off the virtual racetrack.
The Future: Full Throttle Ahead
The past four years at Init Esports have been an exhilarating journey, and we are just getting started. The intersections of esports and motorsports are ripe with opportunities, particularly for women. My advice for anyone considering entering this vibrant landscape? Embrace the challenge. Pursue knowledge, trust yourself, and immerse yourself fully. The path is not without obstacles, but if you remain true to your passion and persist, the rewards will be plentiful.
My career has been defined by breaking down barriers and proving that the seemingly impossible is achievable. I am far from finished. Whether on the track, in the corporate world, or within the virtual gaming environment, my objective remains unchanged: to carve pathways for the next generation of women to achieve their aspirations. Through Init Esports, we are realizing that vision every single day.
