Spain online gambling revenue hits record €1.45 billion in 2024

In 2024, the online gross gambling revenue (GGR) in Spain achieved remarkable growth, surging by 17.6% year-on-year. This increase was fueled by substantial gains in both the online casino and sports betting sectors, signaling a robust recovery and expansion in the Spanish gambling market.
The total revenue for the year ending December 31, 2024, reached a historic €1.45 billion (£1.21 billion/$1.56 billion), eclipsing the previous year’s record of €1.24 billion in online GGR. This growth underlines the ongoing evolution and increasing popularity of online gambling in Spain.
Recent data released by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) on March 24, 2025, revealed that overall deposits climbed 19.6% to €4.58 billion, while withdrawals also advanced by 19.7%, totaling €3.15 billion—indicative of successful player engagement and increased winnings within the online realm.
Record Growth in Online Casino and Sports Betting
Analyzing specific market segments, the online casino sector emerged as the predominant contributor to revenue in Spain. The total GGR from online casinos reached €730.7 million, marking a 17% increase and setting a new benchmark for the industry.
Within this segment, slots proved to be the top revenue generator, contributing €472.2 million—a notable 22.8% expansion. Live roulette followed closely, with €208.8 million in revenue, while non-live roulette accounted for €24.9 million.
Shifting focus to sports betting, the GGR for this segment amounted to €608.9 million, reflecting a significant growth rate of 23.8%. Notably, live betting was the leading revenue stream, generating €285.1 million, which represented a 24.1% increase. Pre-match betting was similarly strong, bringing in €284.7 million, while other betting formats accounted for €32.3 million.
In terms of poker, GGR stood at €100.1 million, although this shows a 5% decline compared to the prior year. Revenue from poker tournaments reached €73.6 million, with cash games contributing €26.4 million. Additionally, bingo revenues grew year-on-year by 23.8%, totaling €14.9 million. The only decline was seen in contests, which plummeted by 98.5% to €7,057.
Increased Marketing Investment Spurring Market Activity
Marketing efforts played a pivotal role in this impressive growth, with total expenditure reaching €526.3 million—a 30.4% increase from the previous year. A significant portion of this budget, €261.5 million, was allocated to bonuses, which rose by 30.8%. This increase was largely driven by the reinstatement of welcome bonuses in April 2024, following a relaxation of several advertising restrictions.
The DGOJ reported that overall marketing expenditures—including advertising, affiliate marketing, and sponsorships—experienced robust growth year-on-year. This surge in marketing activity has been correlated with heightened market engagement, as evidenced by a 21.7% increase in the total number of active players, now reaching 1.9 million. Furthermore, total active accounts rose by 26.0%, amounting to 3.8 million in 2024.
Moreover, the monthly average of active accounts surged by 23.5% to 1.4 million, and the average number of new accounts rose remarkably by 34.7%, reaching 151,898 monthly. These statistics reflect a vibrant and expanding online gambling ecosystem in Spain, driven by strategic marketing and enhanced player offerings.
