Ng Wai Han to lead Macau gaming regulator

Ng Wai Han has officially been appointed as the new head of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), according to a recent announcement in the government’s Official Bulletin dated May 7. This appointment marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Macau’s gaming oversight, as Ng becomes the first woman to lead an agency responsible for overseeing the region’s multibillion-dollar gaming industry.

Ng succeeds Adriano Marques Ho, who has transitioned to serve as the customs director general under Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai. Her role in the DICJ reflects a broader leadership transition initiated with Hou’s accession to office in December, following the tenure of former chief executive Ho Iat-Seng.

With an extensive background in public administration, Ng’s career includes influential positions at the Macau Labour Affairs Bureau from 1999 to 2017, and a progressive climb to deputy director of the Public Administration Bureau. She was elevated to the director position in September 2023, and she holds a master’s degree in criminal law from Sun Yat-Sen University, equipping her with a robust legal framework essential for interpreting and enforcing gaming regulations.

Secretary for Economy and Finance Tai Kin Ip lauded Ng’s credentials, emphasizing her professionalism and competence in navigating the complexities of the gaming sector. Ng will undertake an initial one-year term, during which her leadership will be crucial for guiding Macau’s gaming policies at a time of significant industry transformation.

As Ng steps into this pivotal role, she faces the challenge of steering Macau’s gaming sector through a dynamic landscape. In 2024, Macau’s casinos generated a staggering MOP 226.8 billion ($28.1 billion) in revenue, markedly surpassing competitors such as Las Vegas ($15.8 billion) and Singapore (nearly $6 billion). This impressive trajectory underscores the importance of responsive governance and innovative regulation to sustain growth in the gaming industry.
