Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has released its monthly report for November 2023, showcasing significant recovery in the region’s gaming sector. The data reveals that gross gaming revenue (GGR) surged by an impressive 435% compared to the same period last year.

In November, the GGR totaled MOP$16.04 billion (approximately $1.99 billion or €1.75 billion). While this marks a 17.74% decline from the record high of MOP$19.5 billion ($2.42 billion or €2.23 billion) achieved in October, the dip was anticipated following the remarkable GGR of MOP$6.65 billion ($825 million or €778.4 million) registered during the annual Golden Week holiday festivities. This peak highlighted the industry’s robust recovery trajectory, as the average daily revenue observed during this period was the strongest since the closure of gaming facilities due to the pandemic.

The November revenues underscore the resilience of Macau’s gaming industry as it progresses towards full recovery from the impacts of COVID-19. Analysts are indicating that mass gaming revenues have rebounded to levels equivalent to or exceeding those from 2019. Projections suggest that for the fiscal year 2023, revenues could surpass US$20 billion (€18.4 billion).

Throughout the first eleven months of 2023, Macau’s cumulative GGR reached MOP$164.5 billion (approximately $20.4 billion or €18.8 billion), demonstrating a remarkable 325% increase year-on-year. This recovery trajectory has translated into GGR levels rebounding to approximately 61% of the MOP$269.6 billion ($33.5 billion or €30.9 billion) recorded during the same timeframe in 2019.

### Quarterly Insights: Q3 Performance Review

In a report published earlier in October, the DICJ provided insights into the gaming revenues for the third quarter ending September 30, 2023. The results indicated a 6.7% decline in GGR compared to the pre-pandemic figures of 2019. This downturn, however, was overshadowed by the overall performance of the industry throughout 2023.

The government further disclosed that during the first nine months of 2023, a total of MOP$45.8 billion ($5.68 billion) was collected, reflecting an impressive 203% increase year-on-year. This substantial growth highlights the ongoing recovery and revitalization of the gaming sector in the face of previous challenges.

### Conclusion

Macau’s gaming industry is experiencing a transformative resurgence as it navigates the post-pandemic landscape. With revenues showing strong growth patterns and returning to pre-COVID levels, the outlook for the remainder of 2023 remains positive. Stakeholders within the gambling sector must remain vigilant by analyzing market trends and consumer behavior to align their strategies effectively. The data underscore both the resilience of the industry and the potential for continued growth in this dynamic and competitive environment.
