Jim Ananich Named Chair of Michigan Gaming Control Board
Henry Williams, Executive Director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), announced on Monday that Governor Gretchen Whitmer has appointed Jim Ananich as the new Chair of the Board, marking a significant leadership change within Michigan’s gaming regulatory framework.
Jim Ananich Steps Up as Chair of the MGCB
Jim Ananich succeeds Linda Forte, whose term has concluded. Ananich’s term is set to expire on December 31, 2028, and he will represent the Democratic Party on the Board. His appointment will require confirmation from the Michigan Senate.
“Jim Ananich demonstrates exemplary leadership qualities and a longstanding dedication to public service in Michigan,” states Henry Williams of the MGCB. “His legislative expertise, strategic vision, and ability to collaborate make him exceptionally qualified to guide the Board as we strive to uphold the integrity of gaming in our state.”
Currently, Ananich serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Flint Health Coalition. He is also an established educator, lecturing on state and local governance at the University of Michigan-Flint.
A native of Flint, Ananich has had a distinguished career, previously serving as the Michigan Senate Minority Leader, a State Representative, and the President of the Flint City Council. Notably, his professional journey began as a high school social studies teacher, showcasing a commitment to education and community engagement.
The Board Composition and Responsibilities
Ananich holds a bachelor’s degree in political economy from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Michigan. Furthermore, he is active in community service, serving on the Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.

The MGCB is composed of five residents of Michigan who are appointed by the Governor, with one member designated as chairperson. According to the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act, no more than three Board members may belong to the same political party. A minimum of three members is required to conduct official Board business.
Ananich will lead the Board in unison with current members Andrew T. Palms, Joni M. Thrower Davis, Mark Evenson, and Deidre A. Lambert-Bounds, ensuring the Board operates effectively in its mission to regulate Michigan’s gaming industry.
