Greece launches new battle against problem gambling

Memorandum of Cooperation Signed Between Greece’s Gaming Regulator and Health Authority
Greece’s commitment to combating problem gambling receives a significant boost with the recent signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Gaming Supervision and Control Committee (EEEP) and the Health Quality Assurance Organisation (OHQA). This strategic partnership aims to enhance collaborative efforts in preventing and treating gambling addiction across the nation.
Both organizations recognize the urgent need to address the social and economic consequences associated with gambling addiction. Their collaboration will leverage scientifically-backed interventions and robust social support initiatives, aiming to create a safer gambling environment for citizens.
The EEEP and OHQA will focus on several key objectives:
- Prevention of Addiction: Launch targeted campaigns to raise awareness about the risks of gambling.
- Promotion of Responsible Gaming: Implement programs designed to educate players about responsible gambling practices.
- Timely Interventions: Establish mechanisms to support individuals and families experiencing gambling-related issues.
Dimitris Ntzanatos, President of the EEEP, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “We are glad to inaugurate our collaboration with the OHQA. Through this coordination, we aim to utilize combined expertise and eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, facilitating effective solutions to a pressing social issue.”
This memorandum will span a three-year period, overseen by a dedicated joint coordination committee that will ensure the objectives are met efficiently and effectively.
Christos Nestoras, CEO of OHQA, added, “The Memorandum of Understanding represents an essential step toward strengthening our cooperation with the EEEP. Our shared goal is to establish a modern framework grounded in scientific principles, ensuring practical support for those in need.”
Establishment of a Gambling Observatory in Greece
Shortly after this significant memorandum, the EEEP also announced plans for the establishment of a Gambling Observatory. This innovative unit will harness cutting-edge technologies, including Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, to gain insights into gambling behaviors and emerging risks.
Designed to contribute to ongoing scientific research, the Gambling Observatory will serve as a critical resource for both the public and institutional stakeholders. An EEEP spokesperson noted, “The establishment of this research and advisory unit, characterized by high standards of transparency and staffed by esteemed scientists, represents a pioneering initiative on an international scale. Key principles of independence, objectivity, and flexibility will define its operations, thereby ensuring the credibility and success of its interventions.”
This forward-thinking approach showcases Greece’s dedication to staying at the forefront of responsible gambling measures, aligning with global best practices and reflecting a comprehensive strategy for tackling gambling-related issues.
