Esports Entertainment adds Sun Gaming founder Soper to board

Esports Entertainment Group (EEG) has strategically appointed Robert Soper, the founder of Sun Gaming & Hospitality, to its board of directors, signaling a robust enhancement to its leadership.
With a wealth of experience, Soper has been at the helm of Sun Gaming & Hospitality as president and CEO since its inception in April 2017. His company specializes in providing advisory services tailored for resort operators, investors, regulatory agencies, private equity funds, financial institutions, and developers within the burgeoning gaming sector.
Before founding Sun Gaming, Soper played a crucial role in the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, serving as president and CEO. Additionally, he held the position of international president for Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, further solidifying his expertise in the gaming industry.
Earlier in his career, Soper dedicated nearly 14 years to Mohegan Sun, where he excelled as president and CEO of facilities in both Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Notably, he spearheaded the organization’s entry into the online gambling market, positioning Mohegan Sun as a trailblazer amid the industry’s expansive digital evolution.
“I am honored to welcome Robert, a highly esteemed leader recognized across the resort and gaming sectors, to our board of directors,” stated Alex Igelman, CEO of EEG. “His substantial track record and extensive relationships within the industry will undeniably add considerable value to our company as we pursue our strategic turnaround. Robert’s decision to join our board reflects his confidence in our ongoing transformation and underscores our significant potential within the iGaming and esports arenas.”
EEG People Moves: Strategic Leadership Changes
This appointment follows the recent announcement of Damian Mathews’ return as chief operating officer of EEG. Mathews previously served as chief financial officer from April 2022 until December 2022 and briefly held the COO position during the transitional period.
Though Mathews stepped down from both roles in December, he remains an active member of EEG’s board of directors, a position he has held since June 2020. His insights and leadership will further augment EEG’s strategy, as the company continues to navigate the evolving landscape of gaming and esports.
With these strategic appointments, EEG is poised to leverage industry experience and networks that are essential for driving growth and innovation in the competitive gaming sector.
