ESIC suspends CS:GO player for match-fixing
The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has recently imposed a suspension on professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) player Joel Holmlund, following allegations that he participated in betting activities on matches in which he was a competitor.
Holmlund, who was a member of the CS:GO team Godsent, has been accused of violating ESIC’s Anti-Corruption Code during his participation in the BetBoom Playlist Urbanistic event and the IEM Dallas 2023 qualifier. These allegations raise significant concerns regarding integrity within the esports community.
According to ESIC’s investigations, Holmlund reportedly placed bets on matches he played in between March 27 and March 28, 2023. Additionally, there are accusations that he placed two bets against his own team on March 31, 2023. In total, the integrity body claims Holmlund engaged in betting on 17 CS:GO matches between March 29 and May 1, 2023.
Violations of ESIC’s Code of Conduct
In light of these actions, Holmlund has been charged with multiple breaches of ESIC’s Code of Conduct. Specifically, he is accused of contravening section 2.1.1, which explicitly forbids conspiring to fix a match. Furthermore, he faces charges related to his betting activities, including wagering on matches in which he participated and failing to disclose these actions to ESIC. Such conduct not only undermines competitive integrity but also tarnishes the reputation of the esports industry as a whole.
Given the severity of the allegations, ESIC has decided to suspend Holmlund from all events affiliated with its member organizations, signifying a strict stance on any behavior that could jeopardize the integrity of esports.
In defense of his actions, Holmlund took to X (formerly Twitter), where he vehemently denied the allegations. He asserted that he only became aware of the charges on August 30 and was previously informed that no further actions would be taken against him. “Their public declaration is profoundly unjust,” he stated. “They are making baseless accusations against me. However, if I speak out publicly, I risk violating confidentiality agreements.”
Holmlund has expressed his willingness to cooperate with ESIC and plans to provide a formal response to the allegations, with his legal representation involved, by October 6. This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial need for transparency and ethics in the rapidly evolving world of esports.
