In 2024, Denmark witnessed a 6.9% year-on-year increase in gross gambling revenue, driven primarily by a significant surge in the online casino sector.

Throughout the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, Denmark’s total gambling revenue reached DKK7.27 billion (approximately £811.2 million, €974.1 million, or $1.02 billion), exceeding the DKK6.80 billion recorded in 2023. This robust growth highlights the dynamic nature of the Danish gambling market.

According to data recently released by the regulatory authority, Spillemyndigheden, the online casino segment emerged as the leading contributor to overall revenue. In 2024, online casino earnings soared to DKK3.53 billion, marking a remarkable 14.7% increase compared to the previous year.

Analyzing the composition of online casino revenues reveals that slot games remained the dominant force, accounting for an impressive 78.2% of total online revenue. In contrast, blackjack and roulette garnered 6.7% and 6.4% of the revenue, respectively. The remaining percentage was allocated among poker, bingo, and various other gaming options.

Revenue Trends: Sports Betting and Casinos Grow, Slots Face Decline

The overall landscape of the gambling market in Denmark exhibited mixed performance across different segments. Sports betting secured the second position in total revenue generation, experiencing a modest increase of 1.2% year-on-year, amounting to DKK2.21 billion.

Mobile platforms dominated this sector, contributing an impressive 70.4% to the overall sports betting revenue. In contrast, computer-based betting represented 15.1%, while land-based betting accounted for 14.5% of the market. This shift toward mobile betting underscores the growing trend of consumers favoring digital platforms for their wagering activities.

Land-based casinos also enjoyed a slight revenue increase, albeit small at 1.7%, reaching DKK368 million. Conversely, revenue from physical slot machines experienced a decline of 1.2% year-on-year, totaling DKK1.16 billion. This trend highlights potential challenges facing land-based slot operations as more players gravitate towards online gaming experiences.

December’s Revenue Overview: A Mixed Bag

Focusing on the final month of the year, Denmark’s overall gambling revenue in December reached DKK670 million, representing a 0.8% increase from the same month in 2023.

Once again, the online casino sector led the charge, generating DKK347 million—up 13.6% from the previous December. The land-based casino sector also reported growth, with revenues increasing by 2.2% to DKK35 million.

In contrast, the sports betting and physical slot machine segments encountered setbacks. Sports betting revenue dipped significantly by 15.7%, totaling DKK191 million, while revenue from slot machines fell by 1.7% to DKK98 million. These figures suggest potential volatility and challenges in these traditional gambling sectors.

Overall, the Danish gambling market exhibits encouraging growth, particularly within the online casino space. As trends evolve, stakeholders within the gambling industry must adapt to shifting consumer preferences, emphasizing the need for innovative strategies and enhanced user experiences to sustain growth across all segments.
