Welcome to the Weekend Report, where we delve into the pivotal developments from the gambling industry over the weekend. This week, we spotlight: concerns from the British Horseracing Authority regarding illegal gambling in the UK, increased website blockages in Australia, and the strategic partnership between Abios and Kindred in the esports betting arena.

Concerns from the British Horseracing Authority on Illegal Gambling Growth

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has raised alarms about the alarming surge in illegal gambling activity within the UK. This concern follows the release of a comprehensive study conducted by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, which highlights a staggering 522% increase in traffic to unlicensed gambling websites between 2021 and 2024.

According to the report, unique visits to 22 of the most frequented unauthorized gambling sites soared, with over 600,000 unique monthly visits recorded from January to September 2024. In stark contrast, the legal landscape experienced only a modest 49% growth in unique visits among the top 10 licensed UK gambling sites during the same period.

Brant Dunshea, acting chief executive of the BHA, articulated the urgency of the situation: “From the onset of the Gambling Act Review, British racing has continually warned of the unforeseen ramifications of policy changes on our sport, including the danger of stimulating illegal market activity. This study starkly confirms that this troubling trend is manifesting as a reality.”

Australia’s Ongoing Battle Against Illegal Gambling Websites

In line with global efforts to combat illegal online gambling, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued blocking orders for eight additional websites. The sites under scrutiny include JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, Aura Play, Instant Casino, Leon, Rich Papa, UUSpin, and Wild Pokies, with ACMA mandating internet service providers to prevent access to these platforms.

Since ACMA’s initial blocking request in November 2019, a total of 1,154 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have been effectively blocked. Furthermore, around 220 unlawful services have ceased operations in Australia following the implementation of stringent online gambling regulations since 2017.

“The ACMA reminds consumers that even ostensibly legitimate services may lack essential consumer protections,” the authority cautioned, emphasizing the importance of engaging with licensed operators to ensure safety and compliance.

Aristocrat Interactive Appoints New MD for iGaming Division

In a key appointment, Aristocrat Interactive has welcomed Nir Hakarmeli as the managing director of its iGaming and sports division in the United States. Hakarmeli, who has an extensive background in the gambling sector since 2014, previously served as head of gaming at William Hill and played significant roles at Ladbrokes Coral and Addison Global, the latter of which spearheaded the MoPlay brand.

Most recently, he was the managing director for international markets at Evoke. “What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to drive growth by delivering a diverse range of innovative offerings to operators worldwide,” Hakarmeli stated upon assuming his new position in January. He expressed enthusiasm about the potential to cultivate and lead a team poised to establish Aristocrat Interactive as a global leader in the industry.

Abios and Kindred Forge Partnership in Esports Betting

In an exciting development within the esports sector, Abios, a subsidiary of Kambi Group, has secured a partnership with Kindred Group to enhance its offerings in esports betting. This collaboration will see Abios supply a comprehensive suite of esports betting solutions to Kindred, including advanced odds, data, widgets, and continuous content updates.

This initiative supplements the existing esports odds service that Abios provides to Kindred as part of Kambi’s turnkey sportsbook solution, ensuring a cohesive and enriched betting experience for users. The new content will be integrated into Kindred’s popular brands, Unibet and 32Red. Ben Colley, sportsbook director at Kindred, emphasized the growing significance of esports, stating, “Esports continues to grow in popularity, and it is essential that we offer our customers the best possible experience in this exciting category.”

As the industry evolves, these strategic developments underscore the importance of adapting to changing regulatory environments and consumer preferences, positioning stakeholders for sustained growth and engagement in the vibrant landscape of gambling.
